South Africa's Green Energy Milestone with Wind Farm and Sasol Partnership
Key Ideas
- 69MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm in South Africa becomes first IPP using wind technology to sell to a private offtaker, Sasol.
- Energy from the wind farm is used to produce green hydrogen at Sasol's plant in Sasolburg, aiding in reducing carbon footprint.
- Sasol aims to achieve 1,200MW of green energy by 2030, with 750MW already secured through green energy agreements.
- African Clean Energy Developments (Aced) leads the consortium developing the wind farm, with a focus on renewable energy projects in South Africa.
South Africa's renewable energy industry has achieved a significant milestone with the commissioning of the 69MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm, marking the first independent power producer (IPP) using wind technology to sell energy to a private offtaker, Sasol. Located near Bedford in the Eastern Cape, the wind farm supplies energy to Sasol's plant in Sasolburg to produce green hydrogen. This initiative is part of Sasol's strategy to secure 1,200MW of green energy by 2030, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and support the country's energy transition. The project, developed by a consortium led by African Clean Energy Developments (Aced), includes 16 turbines with a generation capacity of 4.5MW each. A power purchase agreement with Sasol ensures the long-term sustainability of the project. Aced and its parent company, African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), are actively engaged in South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (Reippp), with approximately 1,000MW of projects already operational. By targeting the private sector early on, Aced has successfully established itself in the renewable energy market, with previous projects like the 30MW solar farm cluster in the Free State. The company's proactive approach in obtaining network connections and necessary approvals has positioned it as a key player in the country's renewable energy landscape.
