The South African Cabinet has given the green light to the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM), signaling a significant step towards transforming the country's energy landscape. The masterplan aims to bolster energy security and industrial growth by expanding renewable energy capacity and implementing battery storage solutions. As South Africa anticipates a doubling in electricity demand by 2040, SAREM outlines a strategic roadmap to address key challenges in energy infrastructure, investment, and capacity. The plan is structured around four pillars: supporting local demand for renewable power, developing clean energy value chains, promoting inclusive growth and industry transformation, and fostering skills and innovation for long-term sustainability. The approval of SAREM coincides with South Africa's intensified focus on clean energy, as outlined in the revised Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) that targets significant new capacity additions by 2030, particularly from wind and solar sources. The masterplan also highlights the importance of public-private partnerships, skills enhancement, and the incorporation of green hydrogen to meet global decarbonization objectives.
