Global law firm Ashurst has provided legal advice to John Laing Group in a corporate Private to Private Partnership with Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel) to deliver essential water treatment services to Stegra's flagship industrial site in Boden, Sweden. The partnership aims to construct a Water Treatment Plant (WTP) that will play a vital role in supporting the world's first large-scale green steel plant. Aquatech, a leading provider of water treatment services, will be responsible for the technology solution and service of the WTP equipment, ensuring a sustainable approach to water usage. The WTP will contribute to the production of green hydrogen and purified water for system cooling, while also treating wastewater from the steel mill with a high water recovery rate. Construction of the WTP has commenced in 2023 and is projected to be operational by 2026. This substantial investment underscores John Laing's commitment to advancing green infrastructure in Europe and marks their unique position as the primary sponsor and equity investor in critical infrastructure services for green steel production. The project includes the structuring of a Water Treatment Services Agreement, through which the WTP will receive payments from Stegra. Additionally, John Laing has secured project finance, including equity and senior debt financing with support from the ECA Green Domestic Guarantee. The Ashurst team, led by partner Katie Williams, provided legal counsel throughout the transaction, with a focus on the corporate aspects led by partner Jason Radford. The partnership between John Laing and Stegra represents a significant step towards sustainable steel production and highlights the growing importance of green technologies in the industrial sector.
