During the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference (APPEC) 2024 in Singapore, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg of Sarawak expressed the state's ambition to become a global leader in the green hydrogen market, going beyond ASEAN and Asia Pacific regions. Sarawak is actively investing in clean energy solutions, such as hybrid solar-wind and solar-hydro technologies, to enhance its clean energy strategy and reduce carbon emissions across various sectors. Premier Abang Johari emphasized the importance of sustainable energy development and a low-carbon future, mentioning the state's goal to double its electricity capacity to 10 gigawatts by 2030 and further to 15 gigawatts by 2035. Sarawak is also focusing on producing sustainable aviation fuel from microalgae, alongside advancing in green methanol and exploring other energy sources like wave energy and biomass. The state is keen on collaborating globally and leveraging AI-driven research to optimize energy production and distribution, aiming to solidify its position as a green energy powerhouse in ASEAN. The theme of APPEC 2024, 'Fueling Tomorrow’s Possibilities Together', underlines the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing challenges like climate change and promoting sustainability in the energy sector.
