Thermax's Strategic Partnership with Ceres for Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • Thermax and Ceres have signed a global license agreement for Thermax to produce and sell stack array modules (SAM) using Ceres' advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology.
  • The partnership aims to accelerate the deployment of SOEC technology globally, offering more efficient and cost-effective solutions for green hydrogen production, particularly benefiting hard-to-abate industries.
  • Thermax plans to establish a manufacturing facility for electrolysers, develop the supply chain, and localize critical components to provide large-scale SOEC systems for commercial applications.
  • The collaboration between Thermax and Ceres aligns with India's target to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 and supports the transition towards sustainable and decarbonized industries.
Thermax, an Indian company, has formed a strategic partnership with Ceres Power Holdings plc, a UK-based technology provider, to manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) based on Ceres' solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology. This collaboration aims to boost the global adoption of SOEC technology, offering enhanced efficiency in green hydrogen production. Thermax's expertise in heat integration and waste heat recovery will be leveraged to develop SAM balance of modules (SBM) and multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser modules. These systems are set to be up to 25 percent more efficient than existing low-temperature electrolysis technologies, making them ideal for decarbonizing industries like ammonia production, steel, refineries, and chemicals. The partnership also includes plans for establishing a manufacturing facility, developing the supply chain, and localizing critical components. Through this initiative, Thermax aims to contribute to India's goal of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. The collaboration signifies a commitment to sustainable solutions and driving the energy transition towards decarbonization, especially in challenging industries. Both companies see this partnership as a step towards accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen and supporting the global shift towards cleaner energy sources.
