The European Commission has announced its support for the establishment of the H2START Hydrogen Centre of Excellence in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, to promote hydrogen innovation and sustainability. The project, funded jointly with EUR 15 million under the Horizon Europe Programme and national co-financing, aims to position Stara Zagora as one of the two hydrogen valleys in Europe. This initiative is set to annually produce 500 tons of hydrogen, creating jobs, developing skills, and attracting investments. The Centre will feature state-of-the-art laboratories accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, innovators, startups, and small to medium-sized enterprises, with a focus on advancing hydrogen technologies. Additionally, the project will enhance higher education capacity in Bulgaria to equip the youth with future-oriented skills. Stara Zagora, known for its strategic location, will serve as a showcase for the potential of green hydrogen in improving air quality, reducing CO2 emissions, and fostering economic growth. The European Commission emphasizes the importance of demonstrating clean and sustainable hydrogen technology applications to boost public perception and kick start a hydrogen-based economy in the region and beyond. The launch event included a professional discussion on hydrogen technologies' prospects and significance, indicating a positive outlook on the future of hydrogen innovation in the area.
