The Ministry of Steel in India has undertaken significant measures to drive the adoption of green steel manufacturing in the country, as outlined by the Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma. These efforts include the introduction of a Taxonomy for Green Steel to define low emission steel and the release of a comprehensive report titled 'Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan' that aligns with the recommendations of 14 Task Forces. The roadmap outlined in the report aims at achieving a net-zero target by 2070. The Ministry has secured a budget of Rs. 455 crore for implementing pilot projects that utilize green hydrogen in the steel sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Notably, two pilot projects have been awarded to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen in a vertical shaft, while another project aims to reduce coal and coke consumption in existing Blast Furnaces by using hydrogen. Collaborations with renowned technology providers and institutions like M/s BHP, M/s SMS, and IIT Bombay's National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization highlight the Ministry's commitment to promoting low carbon steel production. Furthermore, initiatives like the National Solar Mission are being leveraged to promote solar energy adoption in the steel industry, indicating a comprehensive approach towards sustainability and emissions reduction.
