Empowering Hydrogen Mobility in Kerala: BPCL and KPIT Technologies Partner for Sustainable Transportation
Key Ideas
  • BPCL and KPIT Technologies signed an MoU to establish Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in Kochi and Trivandrum for pilot hydrogen mobility projects.
  • The initiative aims to gather performance data on fuel cell buses in Kerala's diverse climate, ensuring the reliability of fuel cell technology.
  • BPCL's HRS will produce high-purity green hydrogen for sustainable public transportation, boosting India's hydrogen ecosystem and clean energy initiatives.
  • This collaboration signifies BPCL's commitment to green energy solutions and contributes to India's transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and KPIT Technologies have joined forces in Kerala to advance hydrogen-based mobility. The collaboration, aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will see the establishment of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations in Kochi and Trivandrum to support pilot hydrogen mobility projects. The focus is on integrating indigenous hydrogen technologies into India's clean energy landscape. BPCL will utilize an indigenously developed alkaline electrolyser for hydrogen production, while KPIT Technologies will contribute a locally designed fuel cell-powered bus. This initiative aims to collect essential performance data on fuel cell buses operating in Kerala's varying climate conditions, improving technology reliability for future large-scale adoption. The Hydrogen Refuelling Stations will provide high-purity green hydrogen to fuel buses, fostering sustainable public transportation. BPCL Chairman G. Krishnakumar emphasizes the importance of hydrogen-powered mobility for sustainable transportation, highlighting the partnership's role in developing a hydrogen ecosystem in India. The project will evaluate indigenous fuel cell stack reliability, passenger fleet operations feasibility, and promote wider adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles across the country. This collaboration underscores BPCL's dedication to green energy solutions, supporting India's efforts towards a cleaner and greener future.
