Tata Motors has initiated trials for India's first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks on major freight corridors, with 16 trucks set to be trialed over the next 18-24 months. Inaugurated by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi, the project falls in line with India's target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. Funded by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the trial aims to assess the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered long-haul transport and identify necessary infrastructure for broader adoption. The trucks, using Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle technologies, will operate on key routes like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and others, offering operational ranges of 300-500km. Tata Motors' Executive Director, Girish Wagh, highlighted the importance of this trial in advancing sustainable freight transport aligning with India's green objectives. These hydrogen trucks emphasize safety with advanced features and a premium cabin. This move further strengthens Tata Motors' commitment to green mobility, expanding its lineup of eco-friendly commercial vehicles. The initiative not only contributes to cutting emissions but also sets a significant example for sustainable freight transport on a global scale, showcasing India's dedication to cleaner fuels and a greener future.
