Indian Railways Pioneering Clean Energy: From Hydrogen to Nuclear Power
Key Ideas
  • Indian Railways is moving towards sustainable energy sources by exploring nuclear power alongside its hydrogen-fueled train project.
  • The Ministry of Railways aims to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels through the use of clean and reliable nuclear energy.
  • The development of India's first hydrogen-powered train is underway, showcasing the Railways' commitment to advancing alternative energy-driven transportation.
  • Safety approvals for the hydrogen train project have been obtained, highlighting the meticulous planning and adherence to safety standards.
Indian Railways is making strides in adopting clean energy solutions to power its trains. In addition to its ongoing hydrogen-fueled train project, the Ministry of Railways is venturing into nuclear energy to meet the increasing power demands for train services. The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that the Railways is exploring all energy options, including nuclear power, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and the Ministry of Power are being engaged to allocate nuclear power to Indian Railways. Concurrently, Indian Railways is progressing with its innovative project to develop the country's first hydrogen-powered train. The train, equipped with a Hydrogen Fuel Cell on Diesel Electric Multiple Unit rakes, is being designed to be one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trains globally. Safety measures have been meticulously taken care of, with approvals in place from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation. This dual focus on nuclear and hydrogen power underscores Indian Railways' commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation initiatives, setting a precedent for cleaner energy consumption in the railway sector.
