India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Accelerating Hydrogen-Powered Transportation
Key Ideas
  • Government of India launches five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to deploy hydrogen-powered buses and trucks for testing feasibility and efficiency in real-world conditions.
  • Key players like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC awarded projects with financial support of approximately Rs. 208 Crore from the government.
  • Mission objectives include developing commercially viable hydrogen transport solutions, reducing carbon footprint, and establishing India as a global leader in hydrogen-based technology.
  • Pilot projects aim to demonstrate safe and efficient operations of hydrogen-powered vehicles, assess economic feasibility, and pave the way for wider adoption of hydrogen fuel in India's transportation sector.
The Indian Government has initiated the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) by launching five pilot projects aimed at deploying hydrogen-powered buses and trucks. These projects focus on testing the feasibility, economic viability, and operational efficiency of Green Hydrogen as a fuel in the transportation sector under real-world conditions. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has sanctioned these projects, including 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles, 9 hydrogen refueling stations, and 10 operational routes across India. Major corporations such as TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC have been awarded these projects, with a financial commitment of around Rs. 208 Crore from the government. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an overall budget of Rs. 19,744 crores up to FY 2029-30, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy and position the country as a global leader in hydrogen-based technology. The mission objectives include developing viable hydrogen-based transport solutions, supporting infrastructure development, reducing carbon footprint, and assessing economic feasibility and technical performance of hydrogen-powered vehicles. These pilot projects are crucial in validating hydrogen-powered transport technologies and are expected to lead to broader adoption of hydrogen fuel in India's transportation sector, aligning with the nation's commitment to clean energy transition.
