UAE's Commitment to Sustainable Hydrogen: Drafting New Legislations for a Bright Future
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in the UAE, in collaboration with IPHE, is developing new legislations to support hydrogen production sustainability.
  • These policies will not only benefit the UAE but also serve as a model for all IPHE member states to promote hydrogen as a key fuel source.
  • The UAE aims to produce 1.4 million metric tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031, with a focus on comprehensive regulations to become a global leader in the sector.
  • A significant reduction in hydrogen production costs by 40 to 50 per cent to USD 5-6 per kilogram is enhancing the sector's sustainability and efficiency.
During Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure in the UAE, announced collaborative efforts with the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE) to draft new legislations and policies supporting the sustainability of hydrogen production. These initiatives aim to create a roadmap and clear standards for the long-term viability of the hydrogen sector, with a specific focus on the production of 1.4 million metric tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031. The UAE's commitment to promoting hydrogen as the fuel of the future includes comprehensive regulations on production, transportation, and other aspects to establish the country as a global producer and exporter of low-carbon hydrogen energy. Al Mazrouei highlighted the significant decrease in hydrogen production costs, from USD 10 per kilogram to USD 5-6 per kilogram, contributing to the sector's sustainability and efficiency. The UAE's active involvement in developing sustainable legislations for the hydrogen sector showcases its dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.
