Masdar and EMSTEEL have collaborated on a pioneering pilot project in the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating the utilization of green hydrogen to produce green steel, marking a significant milestone in the MENA region. The renewable hydrogen produced in this project has received certification from Avance Labs, in alignment with the ISO 19870 methodology, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable practices. Bureau Veritas validated the certification data as a third-party assurance provider. The CEOs of Masdar and EMSTEEL, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi and Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, respectively, expressed their dedication to driving decarbonization efforts in the sector, supporting the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The steel industry, being carbon-intensive and hard-to-abate, contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, making decarbonization of this sector essential for achieving global sustainability goals. The UAE aims to position itself as a major hub for green steel production, fueled by the rising demand for sustainable materials. The National Green Certificates Program, initiated by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, promotes the use of sustainable building materials like green steel. The pilot project not only supports Abu Dhabi's Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy but also complements the UAE National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to establish the country as a top global producer of low carbon hydrogen by 2031. The initiative highlights a strategic move towards a sustainable future, emphasizing economic growth, energy security, and sustainability. Moreover, the upcoming gasworld MENA Industrial Gases Conference in Abu Dhabi signifies the region's commitment to decarbonization, green energy, and industrial advancements, reflecting the shared vision for a sustainable future.
