Canadian Pacific Kansas City Launches Hydrogen Stations in Calgary and Edmonton
Key Ideas
  • Canadian Pacific Kansas City has successfully launched two hydrogen production and refuelling stations in Calgary and Edmonton.
  • The stations are part of CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program aimed at retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to reduce emissions.
  • CPKC's partnership with Atco EnPower has facilitated the construction and operation of the hydrogen production facilities.
  • The hydrogen-powered locomotives emit only water vapour, contributing to cleaner transportation and sustainability efforts.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City announced the successful operation of two new hydrogen production and refuelling stations in Calgary and Edmonton. These stations are part of CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program, which involves retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to enable them to operate without directly emitting harmful emissions. The partnership between CPKC and Atco EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Ltd., has played a crucial role in the design and construction of these stations. In 2020, CPKC committed to developing North America’s first line-haul hydrogen-powered locomotive utilizing fuel cells and batteries for electric traction. Currently, CPKC has three hydrogen-powered locomotives in service. The initiative aims to promote sustainability in the transportation sector by significantly reducing emissions, as hydrogen-powered locomotives only emit water vapour. This development marks a significant step towards cleaner energy and innovation in the railway industry.
