Voith and Mehrer Partner to Develop High-Pressure Hydrogen Compressors
Key Ideas
  • Voith and Mehrer have entered a strategic partnership to create advanced compressors for hydrogen applications up to 900 bar pressure.
  • The partnership combines Mehrer's expertise in oil-free compression with Voith's drive technology for sustainable hydrogen solutions.
  • Voith also introduced a high-pressure hydrogen storage system for heavy-duty vehicles, catering to the commercial transport sector's energy needs.
  • The European Hydrogen Backbone initiative foresees significant growth in the EU's hydrogen market by 2030, with hydrogen expected to contribute up to 14% of the EU's energy mix by 2050.
Voith Group and Mehrer Compression GmbH have formed a strategic partnership with a focus on developing high-pressure compressors customized for hydrogen applications, with a target range of up to 900 bar. These compressors will cater to various uses such as pipeline compression, trailer filling, and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Jörg-Peter Mehrer, President of Mehrer Compression GmbH, highlighted the synergy between the companies' experience in sustainable technology and emissions reduction, specifically in oil-free hydrogen and CO2 compression. Voith has recently launched a plug-and-drive hydrogen storage system designed for heavy-duty vehicles, aiming to reduce refueling frequency while meeting European safety standards. The companies' initiatives align with the growth projections of the European hydrogen market, as indicated by the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative, which forecasts a substantial electrolysis capacity boost by 2030. The European Commission's goal to have hydrogen account for up to 14% of the EU's energy mix by 2050 reflects the increasing investments in hydrogen infrastructure, storage solutions, and transportation advancements across member states.
