India's Milestone: Launching Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub for Sustainable Energy Future
Key Ideas
- PM Modi initiated the groundbreaking for the Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub, a major step towards sustainable energy in India.
- The hub will attract significant investments, with a capacity of 20 GW renewable energy and production of 1,500 TPD of green hydrogen.
- Strategically located in Visakhapatnam, the hub aims to create jobs, reduce carbon emissions, and promote green hydrogen and its derivatives for export.
- Aligned with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project signifies a shift towards self-reliance in green energy production and global leadership.
On January 8, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Anakapalle district, near Visakhapatnam. This marks a significant milestone in India's commitment to sustainable energy. The hub, a collaboration between NGEL and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh, is the first of its kind under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. With an estimated investment of ₹1.85 lakh crore, the hub will house 20 GW of renewable energy projects and produce 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen and 7,500 TPD of green hydrogen derivatives like methanol, urea, and sustainable aviation fuel for export markets. With a focus on advanced electrolysis technology powered by solar and wind energy, the hub aims to revolutionize industrial and transportation sectors by offering sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. This initiative is expected to create numerous jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, and support India's efforts to achieve its climate goals. The project aligns with India's ambition to become a global leader in green hydrogen production and reduce dependency on energy imports, contributing to a greener and more self-sufficient future.
