Indian Railways is set to launch its first hydrogen train by the end of 2024, signaling a push towards green and sustainable transportation. Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member (Infrastructure) of the Railway Board, announced plans for a total of 50 hydrogen trains by 2047 to mitigate carbon emissions. The rail network is also progressing with the high-speed rail project, targeting the operation of the first bullet train by 2027. In terms of safety, the Indigenous train protection system, Kavach, is undergoing expansion by 3,000 kilometers on major routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah. Additionally, the GatiShakti Directorate is ramping up infrastructure development, increasing track laying speed to 14 kilometers per day. Indian Railways has ambitious goals to boost its share of the freight logistics market, aiming for 3,000 million tonnes by 2030-31. These initiatives emphasize a modernization drive in India's railway sector, focusing on clean energy adoption and improved safety measures.
